With Dylan Meyer’s The Wrong Girls now on Letterboxd Video Store, Meyer shares a list of ten inspirations. Repo Man Spiritually, no movie influenced The Wrong Girls as much as this one. Its joyfully janky low-fi approach to sci-fi taught me you can have big dreams without big... dollars. And that is its own totally desirable vibe! This movie's also a great example of the match made in heaven that is punk and comic sci-fi absurdity. Most of all, it has a kind of freewheeling anarchic chaos that I wanted desperately for The Wrong Girls - an explicit contempt for order and perfection. And Robby Muller is my fav DP of all time for ever and ever and ever. Dick For my money, this is the best buddy comedy for girls we have. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams are both hilarity supernovas in this film and their chemistry is a million watts of pure joy. It's perfectly stupid and perfectly brilliant all at once - a feast for the eyes and ears. Also a great example of a story in which the main characters don't know what movie they're in, which was integral to how I played the jokes in WG and made it a massive tonal comp for me. I love DICK so much it makes me sick. (is a joke that could have been in the movie Dick.) Desperately Seeking Susan I wish there were 10,000,000 more movies like this one because if there were they would all be my favorite. A mixture of counter-culture authenticity, a colorful aesthetic bonanza and a hilarious popcorn plot sensibility starring GIRLS and directed by a woman!? It feels like it shouldn't even exist but it DOES and I would physically eat this movie if I could. Proof that a comedy can and should still look hot. Related: nothing has ever been more erotic than Madonna eating those Cheetos. Daisies Daisies is femme-y psychedelic friendship chaos personified and that's what I wanted for The Wrong Girls. It's so zany and itself and the world it inhabits is so heightened and stylized in a way that felt right for the stoney POV of Frankie and Molly. A masterclass in The Art of the Duo. Certain beats in WG are designed to reflect compositions in this movie. Wayne's World These guys told me to Party On, so I did. In life and in art. Romy and Michele's High School Reunion If I have to explain the influence of this film on my movie like what am I even doing I have clearly fucked up. This movie is the GOAT - the most formative experience I've had of watching women allowed to be stupid friends in a movie. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorovino taught me that geniuses make the best idiots and that female friendship is worth making a film about - thank you ladies. Ghost World The pinnacle of Alt Girl canon ft. an outsider pair of girl bffs. Terry Zwigoff showed me who I wanted to be with this movie and I looked at it as a north star for vibes constantly, esp production design. I loved Enid's spaces growing up so much - they made me a curatorial, eccentric treasure hunter in my own life and created, by extension, the taste palette I brought to The Wrong Girls. Beavis and Butt-Head Do America The patron saints of immature and stupid. Another good example of characters who don't know what movie they're in, this gem plays into the comedic hard contrasts of B & B's POV of their circumstances vs the POV of all the other characters. The Wrong Girls is in many ways a cartoon itself and it owes a lot to these dodos. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure This mixture of love for rock and roll and positiivty and friendship and whacky sci-fi hijinks really fed my dreams for this movie. Just a couple of well-meaning good dudes talking about being excellent to each other in Southern California. Obviously. Gave me permission to shoot really dumb, wide, flat 2 shots with confidence. Convinced me simpler is better and not to overthink it. The Big Lebowski There aren't a ton of weed movies on this list because I didn't want The Wrong Girls to feel like a regular weed movie but The Big Lebowski is foundational to where WG came from. Where does The Dude stop and I begin... I think my identification with him, the influence he had on me and the deadbeat I became, created the desire to write The Wrong Girls in the first place. This is the gold star of LA Townie Movies and the movie that best captures the spirit of what it's like to be a chill cruiser in a capitalist world of aggro intensity. Countless shameless references to The Big Lebowski in my movie. The Wrong Girls abide.
